Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters - Saint Leo's College, Leo, FL
The citation reads:
The Trustees, Administration and Faculty of Saint Leo College are privileged to confer this Citation and accompanying Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters upon the honorable Melvin R. Laird for his noteworthy service to the residents of Wisconsin and other citizens of the United States in the United States House of Representatives during 1952 through 1968.
For his major interest and accomplishments in Congress, in the areas of national security, education, health, labor and agriculture, and for the resultant books and papers interpretive of public policy.
For his dedicated service that won him the Albert Lasker Medical Research Award, the Distinguished Service Award of the American Political Science Association, the Presidential Citation of the American Public Health Association, and the Distinguished Service Award of the National Educational Association.
For valorous service to his Country with Admiral Halsey's Third fleet during World War II, and for continuing service to the Nation as a member of the Cabinet of the President of the United States, charged with the responsibilities of the most important civilian post, next to the Commander-in-Chief, in the defense and security of the Nation and its citizens.
Accomplished at Saint Leo in the State of Florida, on this twenty-sixth day of April in the Year of Our Lord, nineteen hundred and sixty-nine, at the Third Commencement of Saint Leo college.
