National Farm Medicine Center (NFMC)

Established in 1981 in response to occupational health problems seen in farm patients coming to Marshfield Clinic, the NFMC has focused on evolving issues in agricultural health and safety encompassing behavioral, laboratory and clinical research. Its labs focus on infectious disease, antibiotic resistance of pathogens in livestock and humans, transmission of pathogens via groundwater, and understanding the factors that alter the virulence level of certain pathogens. Since 1997, the NFMC's National Children's Center has been one of eight Centers for Agricultural Disease and Injury Research, Education and Prevention funded by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. It strives to enhance the health and safety of all children exposed to hazards associated with agricultural work and rural environments. Staff members have led national efforts to develop and promote guidelines for children’s participation in agricultural work, and public awareness campaigns to protect youth from fatal injuries associated with tractors.
